Posted by Janna Carney at 1/25/2016

One Book, One School Reading Marathon

WHAT:  One Book, One School wants to share the gift of reading with children and families at Riley Hospital!  Come to the CHS library and read for a worthy cause.  Bring a blanket and pillow so you can cozy up with a good book.  This is a great opportunity to read our One Book, One School title, Positive by Paige Rawl!

    WHEN: Saturday, February 6, 2016

HOW: Participating students must raise at least $10.00 to read a half marathon or $20.00 to read a full marathon. Checks should be made out to CHS with One Book, One School written on the memo line. Donations of NEW children’s books for age birth through young adult will be accepted in place of money. Students must bring one NEW book to read a half marathon or two NEW books to read a full marathon. Books must be NEW. We cannot accept used books no matter the condition.
All proceeds will be used to purchase and donate NEW children’s books to the Edward A. Block Family Library at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. At the end of her memoir, Positive, Paige Rawl names Riley Children’s Foundation as one of her two favorite charities, and she discusses the “outstanding medical care” and “loving, supportive environment” she experienced there.

Duneland Schools media specialists and members of The Association of Indiana School Library Educators (AISLE), Janna Carney Moran, Michelle Ward and Karla Wilson were presenters at this year’s annual Indiana Library Federation conference in Indianapolis this past November. This year’s conference, “Strengthening Connections: Your Key to Success”, stressed the collaborative connections between classrooms and libraries, librarians and patrons, library programming and communities.

Moran and former Duneland Schools English teacher, Diana Gill, presented a session on the collaboration between the library and the advanced composition classes. Together the teacher and the library media specialist focus on specific skills that are layered throughout the course.

Wilson and Ward presided over a concurrent session that looked at the implementation of a library media class with students learning about current library topics and the library procedural skills used daily in any library setting. These skills are transferrable to an elementary or intermediate level media center, working as a library cadet.

The ILF conference, held annually, runs two days of concurrent professional development sessions presented by practicing librarians and media specialists for librarians and media specialist throughout the state. ILF is the professional organization for academic, public and school librarians; AISLE, Association of Indiana School Library Educators, is an Indiana Library Federation affiliate.
